Exploring ACA Health Insurance Plans and Supplemental Coverage

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace has offered vital health insurance access for those facing financial barriers, pre-existing conditions, mental health needs, or maternity costs. If you meet certain income requirements, you may qualify for a subsidized monthly premium, making coverage more affordable.

Key Considerations for ACA Plans

While affordable health coverage through ACA plans is beneficial, it often comes with challenges like high deductibles and HMO networks. Deductibles typically separate into health services and medication categories. While some ACA plans have a $0 deductible, others range from $6,000 to $9,500. Generally, a lower monthly premium means a higher deductible and vice versa.

Even with a $0 deductible, you’ll likely face co-pays and co-insurance until you reach your annual out-of-pocket max (usually around $9,500). After reaching this max, your insurance covers 100% of approved services for the year. For some, choosing a lower premium and setting aside funds for emergencies makes sense, especially if they can cover annual deductible needs. But you’ll always need to replenish those funds each year you use it to cover your out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Consider Adding Supplemental Coverage

Adding supplemental health insurance can help bridge financial gaps that ACA plans leave you, especially for major events like accidents or illnesses. In fact, 61% of medically related bankruptcies happen to those who already have some insurance. A mix of ACA and supplemental plans can provide a more complete safety net.

It’s wise to have at least $10,000 per person per year for out-of-pocket costs. However, this doesn’t cover lost income if you’re unable to work. Supplemental insurance can bridge this gap, often including cash benefits for high deductibles and lost income during illness.

Popular Supplemental Options

Consider these supplemental plans to protect yourself financially:

  • Accident Medical Expense and Critical Illness: Pays cash benefits directly and is affordable.
  • Dental, Vision, and Hearing Plans: Helps with the high cost of maintenance and unexpected needs.
  • Hospital Indemnity Plans: Provides fixed benefits for hospital stays or treatments and can act as primary coverage.

Supplemental plans are typically affordable, often without deductibles or co-pays, and can be used nationwide. This flexibility contrasts with ACA plans, with high deductible and which may limit you to in-state or even in-county networks.

Flexible Options for Diverse Needs

Most states no longer penalize people for not having an ACA plan. As a result, some individuals choose to rely solely on supplemental plans for financial protection. These options, often 30-75% cheaper than major medical plans, provide targeted coverage without the high cost of comprehensive plans.

Note: Availability of carriers and products depends on your state and county. Washington State limits private carrier plans, emphasizing ACA options. However, talking to a health insurance broker like us can reveal supplementals that can make a big difference. In a lot of states, affordable “Core” plans with no deductible and first-dollar coverage are also available.
